Some Republicans Voters Don’t Want Trump. No One Cares.
The Republican Primary isn’t over yet, but we want it to be.
Pundits and reporters have told us over and over again that the Republican primary race is over and has been for a while. Polls have told us that Trump has such a commanding lead that no other candidate has a chance. Seeing those polls, Trump has started to act like he’s already won the primary with Jack Schafer of Politico telling us he is campaigning less and even urging the Republican National Committee to stop wasting their time with debates when the people have already spoken.
But what if the people haven’t spoken? What if all of this supposed unity around Trump is an illusion? What if he isn’t as strong as he appears? What if there is still a chance to stop him from a second term that might be good for him, but terrible for the nation?
I’m not under any illusions that Trump doesn’t have a hold over the GOP and that he does have far more than a nonzero chance getting back to the White House. But a recent story about a focus group of Republicans in the New York Times has me thinking that all the talk of an immovable GOP base that sees Trump as Cheeto Jesus is just that…talk.
