Trump the Dictator: What Are We Supposed to Do?
Why defeating Trump won’t save American democracy.
Over the last week or two a spate of news stories explained what a second term for Donald Trump would look like. The Atlantic devoted a whole issue to his second term and the New York Times did an exhaustive news story on how radical such a term would be. and Robert Kagan wrote an explosive and chilling op-ed on how Trump could give rise to a dictatorship in the Washington Post.
I don’t doubt any of these stories. I believed Trump was a threat to democracy in 2020 and still believe this nearly four years later. I think Donald Trump is like those velociraptors in the first Jurrasic Park who learned how to open doors in that he knows more about how government can work and that he wants loyalists in positions who will let him do what he wants and not undermine him.
All of this worries me as we head into 2024. Yet, it’s hard not to hear all these stories and shrug my shoulders. Not because I don’t care about the outcome, but because I’m left with this question: what are we supposed to do? Is it time to panic and as Kent Brockman of The Simpsons says, “Crack each other’s head open and feast on the goo inside?”
